Takayama

Step back in time with a visit to Takayama, the hillside shrines and Temples beckon you....

Takayama is an authentic Historical Town of Japan and relatively popular with overseas visitors. Takayama is a well preserved town scape from the Edo period about 400 years ago and the state of the Traditional houses is near perfect. Explore the hillside Shrines and Temples of the Higashiyama area as well as the centrally located Hida Kokubun Temple. The Sanmachi area is also the market area of Takayama offering many delicious and local snacks as well as hand crafted products.  If you are wanting to taste some Local Japanese Rise Wine, this may also be the perfect location as there are local distilleries that offer free tastings and also small distillery tours when they aren't making the Sake.

Another great thing about Takayama is that is bascailly all walkable.
Takayama Matsuri or Festival is held twice a year in October and April.  A very popular festival with Japanese and Tourists alike, we suggest you book well in advance to save any disappointment.
Approximately 50 minutes from Takayama is Shirakawago, the Unesco registered Historical Village. Here you can see the Traditional Thatched Roof houses of Japan’s yesteryear. See and be fascinated by how the Japanese lived in such an isolated area, especially in the Winter months that have heavy snowfall. Believe us here at Experience Japan Travel, but when you reach Shirakawago, it is like you are walking back in time into a parallel world.

We had an incredible trip to Japan. Scott Kent planned it with our input and was careful to include all of our special requests. Our English speaking guides andassistants were just wonderful; informative, friendly and delightful to spend our days with learning about Japan. We enjoyed our hotels; The Tokyo Station Hotel, Kinnotake Tonosawa in Hakone and the Kyoto Hotel Okura were all wonderful. The hotel on Miyajima island was just ok. We saw other rooms that were lovely but ours was not one of those. We let Scott know and while he tried to get us moved the hotel was full. Not a game changer for sure. Our guide Misayo brought Tokyo alive for us as did Mira in Kyoto. Ms. Hase in Hiroshima was also wonderful. The food was one of the most memorable experiences; shabu shabu, Kaiseki, Okonomiyage, Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura and more. The Golden Temple and the Shrine of 10,000 Tori Gates were breathtaking. We loved the mountains surrounding Kyoto and the mountains of Hakone. Bullet trains and subways were amazing...always on time to the minute. We loved the people, the cleanliness and of course our visit with our Geiko-san in Kyoto was unforgettable. One suggestion - Carry less luggage. Highly recommend that when traveling in Japan, carry only a carry-on as it makes train and subway travel much easier.... READ MORE
