Ehime Prefecture – Shimanami Kaido

Ehime prefecture is one of the four prefectures that are included in the Shikoku Island of Japan. Accessible by train, ferry, domestic flight, the main City of Matsuyama City is famous for the Dogo Onsen Hot Springs and Matsuyama Castle. However, just 40 minutes to an hour away you have the chance to walk on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrim route or take a cycle ride on the world famous Shimanami-Kaido which can take you from Imabari city to Hiroshima some 70 km (45 miles) away.

Matsuyama City boasts one of the oldest Hot Springs (onsen) in all of Japan and most accommodations also use the spring’s water in the public bathing areas. A balanced city which will not leave you inconvenient in anyway. Matsuyama has a reviving Geisha industry along with many traditional arts such as Noh-raku, Japanese drums and the Buyo style dance. Away from the big cities of Japan, Matsuyama city and its surroundings will offer you the chance to truly relax and see how the Japanese live their daily lives.

Ehime Prefecture also is the perfect destination for people who are interested in being active while feeling tradition and history for over a thousand years. If you are an avid hiker, you may like to visit Kuma Kogen which is part of the Shikoku Island 88 Temple Pilgrim route (Ohenro Route). The track to Temple number 60 is beautiful, but maybe the most important route is from temple 44 to temple 45. Walk at altitudes of approx. 2000 feet and follow the footsteps of the famous Monk Kobodaishi (Kukai). The Ohenro Route spans over 1200 km and usually would take 4 months to complete. Walk part of this route and feel the spirituality and untouched nature just like the people of some 400 years ago did.

Starting from Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture you can ride part or all of the World famous Shimanami Kaido cycle course. A total distance of 45 miles (70 km) which will take you to Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Enjoy all or just partial. Cross over the many islands that are in the Seto Inland Sea which are linked by several long suspensions Bridges. Stop off at several of the islands for local delicacies or boat rides to see swirling waters. This is the kind of Japan that will offer breathtaking natural views and stay in your memories for many years to come, all while being as active as you need. Imabari City is also one of the most famous locations for Japanese made Towels as well as the largest Cargo boat Manufacturers, which you can see up close.

Staying in Matsuyama City makes it possible to visit other locations as day tour. Locations such Ozu city for its castle and the Ganryu Garden. As well as Uwajima fishing town for some their famous sea bream or snapper rice bowl dish.
